Bayern reportedly gearing up for huge summer exit amid mammoth £257.3m problem

Reports over Max Eberl’s suitability for his current duties have been ongoing for months.

Internal tensions have been rising at Säbener Straße in recent weeks.

It’s understood that the relationship between the 51-year-old and the board of directors is becoming increasingly strained.

Although Eberl’s work is generally acknowledged at the club, he’s been reportedly been put under pressure in light of internal disagreements over his attitude and the financials.

The mere mention of names like Mario Gomez, a club legend with strong ties to Bayern, signals that replacement plans may already be in motion.

To outsiders, this tarnishes the image of the club, as such rumours are made public during a crucial phase of the season.

Lothar Matthäus recently pointed out clear ‘disagreements’ behind the scenes, which may not bode well for Max Eberl’s future.

“I believe Max Eberl and Uli Hoeneß aren’t coordinating everything. It looks like the chemistry isn’t quite right, as if things aren’t as harmonious in the leadership as one would wish in a company – which FC Bayern ultimately is,” the former Bayern professional told Bild (via Sky Sports Germany).

Whilst the former Gladbach executive appears, at least outwardly, to be doing a commendable job, he’s found himself a magnet for criticism.

The club’s financials have undoubtedly fed into this, with a UEFA report from early 2024 revealing that we had one of the largest payrolls in world football at €308m [£257.3m] per year.

Some reporting has suggested Bayern want to cut this by €40m [£33.4m].

However, this seems unrealistic given the lucrative contract extensions handed to Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich. That’s even accounting for Thomas Müller’s contract being allowed to run down.

More to the point, how are Bayern expected to compete with Europe’s elite by hamstringing Eberl with the wage budget?

Mario Gomez to return to Säbener Straße?

Sky Sports claims Bayern are now considering whether to install ‘a higher authority over Eberl and Freund’.

It leaves some wondering as to whether our director of sport might be pushed into severing ties with FCB this summer (well ahead of his contract expiring in 2027) alongside, apparently, Thomas Muller.

In the meantime, Mario Gomez, Markus Krösche and Ralf Rangnick are among the names being considered and monitored as part of the considerations for our future direction.

While Max Eberl hasn’t been perfect — especially when it comes to handling wage structures and setting strict boundaries on future contracts — it’s hard to deny the work he has done.

He secured extensions for key players like Davies and Musiala. Moreover, he brought in a superstar in Michae Olise, and finally gave the club a professional face in public again.

The fact that this kind of internal discussion is surfacing right in the middle of a crucial phase of the season is more than questionable.

It creates unnecessary noise and tension, and for many fans, it seems like the same old pattern: Uli Hoeneß wanting more control and surrounding himself with compliant figures.

Eberl inherited a messy situation: inflated contracts, and locker-room imbalance, mostly due to the decisions here before him. He’s made solid moves in a tough spot, and he deserves time, not questioning.
