Upamecano puts PSG on red alert as Max Eberl sweats over contract talks

Dayot Upamecano’s long-term future at Bayern Munich has been thrown into question.

Club chiefs Max Eberl and Christoph Freund were initially confident about concluding contract talks quickly.

However, it seems that the Frenchman is set to remain on his current terms (expiring in 2026) for a while longer.

Contract talks with Upamecano have hit a bit of a stumbling block in recent days.

There are several things the two parties are struggling to see eye to eye on.

FC Bayern can’t agree to higher salary demands at a time when they’re looking to cut costs across the playing squad.

Likewise, the centre-half is looking for a revised release clause. His agents think that his current clause (€120m [£102.7m]) is too high, so they’re demanding that the club set a lower one.

PSG rumours won’t go away

Moussa Sissoko continues to represent Dayot Upamecano. It’s inevitable, then, that the links to PSG will continue, given he also represents other French internationals.

The Bundesliga defender has hardly settled nerves with his constant chopping and changing of representation.

The 26-year-old has changed agents three times in the same number of years. Upamecano switched from German star player agent Volker Struth and his agency (Sports 360) to Gordon Stipic’s Unique Sports Group in 2022.

Bayern Munich’s bosses are feeling the pressure. Vincent Kompany wants to keep working with the Frenchman.

The club would rather sell Kim Min-jae, though only if a potential suitor is prepared to offer around €50m [£42.8m].

Bayern are in a bit of an awkward position. They can’t cave in to Dayot Upamecano’s demands, but they can’t afford to lose the No.2 either.

The player may no longer be considered “untouchable”. However, his performances in the 2024/25 campaign earmark him as Kompany’s most reliable defender.

The Bundesliga leaders have coped well in the league whilst Upamecano has been sidelined (missing 20 games for club and country).

However, his absence was well and truly noted in a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Frenchman trained this week with the ball for the first time since his injury in mid-March. Upamecano was diagnosed with loose bodies in his left knee. The defender had to undergo surgery, including cartilage smoothing.

Therefore, there was no need for a long wound healing period, and he was able to return to the pitch after just two weeks.
