The truth behind Florian Wirtz ‘verbal agreement’ with Bayern as Leverkusen hurdle remains

Bayern Munich are reportedly closing in on the permanent signing of Florian Wirtz.

The Bavarian giants have made it unequivocally clear that they’re admirers of the German international.

And why shouldn’t they be? The Manchester City-linked attacking midfielder is enjoying another astonishing campaign in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season.

He’s registered 28 goal contributions in 42 games (across all competitions).

There’s some very good news for FC Bayern fans if one report from Santi Aouna is to be believed.

Leverkusen were waiting for a decision on Florian Wirtz’s future amid separate reported interest from Real Madrid.

The Foot Mercato reporter has now confirmed that ‘verbal agreement [is] almost reached’ between the player’s entourage and the likely Bundesliga champions.

A huge boost for a side with ambitions of returning to the Champions semi-finals next term after a disappointing early exit in 2024/25.

We can’t see a world in which Vincent Kompany doesn’t slot Wirtz immediately into the starting-XI.

As far as comparisons go, there’s only one midfielder in world football with a superior number of goal contributions this season.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes sits at the top of the table with 35 goal contributions in 51 games.

Player  Games Goal contributions
Bruno Fernandes 51 35
Florian Wirtz 42 28
Morgan Rogers 50 27
Jamal Musiala 40 26
Jude Bellingham 47 26

Jamal Musiala combination could prove deadly

The Bayer Leverkusen ace would not be in bad company in Munich. The prospect of Florian Wirtz linking up with friend and international teammate, Jamal Musiala, is no doubt a tantalising one.

More to the point, it could prove a decisive advantage in beating out interest from Man City and Real Madrid.

Bayern will have to bank on that with Xabi Alonso first in line to replace Carlo Ancelotti this summer.

The Sky Blues’ significant resources, too, mean we can’t discount them entirely from the race. Plus, Wirtz is reportedly an admirer of head coach Pep Guardiola.

Either way, as Aouna’s update clearly establishes, Bayern still have important ground to cover with Bayer Leverkusen.
