Bayern Munich will have to fight off Real Madrid and Manchester City to sign Florian Wirtz.
The German midfielder had been expected to stay put at Bayer Leverkusen until 2026.
However, it’s now understood that a departure in the upcoming summer transfer window is the more likely outcome.
To that end, Bayern are preparing to make an official move for Wirtz at the end of the season. This has already been signposted by the club’s decision not to renew Thomas Müller’s contract.
Florian Wirtz could join Bayern because of Jamal Musiala

It would be foolish for the Bavarian giants to feel they can win the battle on image alone.
Real Madrid are rightly considered European royalty owing to their rich history in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Man City are automatically an attractive proposition owing to Pep Guardiola’s presence.
Bayern do have a positive relationship with Wirtz’s father, Hans-Joachim. But what could really tip negotiations in their favour is the 21-year-old’s friendship with international teammate Jamal Musiala.
“There’s also a strong connection to Jamal Musiala to consider; Wirtz and Musiala have a lot of fun playing together with the German national team,” Christian Falk exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.
It’s because of this combination – playing with Musiala and Wirtz’s father believing a switch to Munich would be a good next step – that Bayern are still in the race.
“Otherwise, he’d prefer to go to Real Madrid or Manchester City because it seems a bigger move.”
What has Wirtz said about Musiala?
Wirtz has made no secret of his admiration for his 22-year-old compatriot.
“I’ve always said that I enjoy playing with him,” the No.10 told Das Erste in 2024.
“I said many times that we understand each other on the pitch and get on well off the pitch too. It’s just so much fun.”
It now remains to be seen whether this will be enough to convince the footballer to switch to Munich this summer.
Theoretically, we should get some clarity about Florian Wirtz’s future as soon as Xabi Alonso confirms his next step in the sport.
The Spanish head coach has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital this summer. Carlo Ancelotti’s job appears under threat, with reports speculating the Italian could take the Brazil national team job after the 2024/25 season.
