Florian Wirtz’s future in the Bundesliga seems tied to the fate of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.
The attacking midfielder, viewed as one of Germany’s most exciting talents, has reportedly been eyed by the chiefs at Bayern Munich ahead of the summer window.
An official move coming in the summer of 2026 had appeared to be the Bavarian giants’ initial plan.
However, that now looks far more likely to be brought forward a year early, with Bayern keen to sign Wirtz this summer.
That’s particularly in light of the possibility Alonso could be due to move across the continent to Real Madrid.
Florian Wirtz’s future will become clear soon

Fabrizio Romano relayed comments on X (formerly Twitter) from Bayer Leverkusen executive Simon Rolfes, which noted that Xabi Alonso’s future should be cleared up ‘soon’.
🚨 Bayer Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes: “There will be a decison on Xabi Alonso's future soon”.
“That's important for us going into the planning of next season of course. That's why there'll be clarity in the not-too-distant future for sure”, told Kicker. pic.twitter.com/OfjWlUW4uf

Perhaps sooner than some commentators may think, given that Die Werkself may be about to engage in one of the most important transfer windows in their history.
Even if the Spanish head coach commits to another season with the incumbent Bundesliga champions, the club will still have to navigate the likelihood of losing their top star.
If reports are to be believed, Florian Wirtz is already considering his options beyond Leverkusen, whilst Manchester City and Bayern Munich continue to circle.
Real Madrid are a threat
If Carlo Ancelotti departs the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, as reports like Relevo suggest is more than a vague possibility, Madrid will have a big hole to plug.
What better way to assuage the fears of the fans and board than by not only bringing in a top young coach, but also a former favoured son in Xabi Alonso?
Los Blancos are already aware of the 43-year-old’s gentleman’s agreement with Leverkusen, which would allow him to negotiate with any one of his former clubs.
As things stand, the Bundesliga coach appears to be Real Madrid’s top target.
It then follows that both Bayern and Manchester City could be forgiven for fearing that Florian Wirtz would follow in his manager’s footsteps all the way to the Spanish capital.
A prospective transfer the midfielder would be ‘very tempted’ by.
