Why Florian Wirtz’s Bayern transfer is inevitable as Real Madrid & Man City left reeling

Florian Wirtz is seemingly inches away from grasping the iconic red jersey of FC Bayern.

There had been fears that fellow European royalty in Real Madrid, or charismatic Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola, could tempt the 22-year-old to take a leap from his comfort zone.

Now, however, it seems that Vincent Kompany’s men have pulled ahead of the pack ahead of the summer window apex.

As I’ve reported with BILD, Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz have agreed on a transfer!

The only question remaining: When will the prospective deal go through?

It should be emphasised that FC Bayern and Leverkusen, where Wirtz is contracted until 2027, have yet to enter into negotiations.

However, this shouldn’t be a point of concern for the Allianz Arena faithful. It’s now clear that the attacking midfielder is prepared to dismiss any contract offers from Leverkusen and any potential offers from suitors like Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Two pathways to Bayern move

The Bavarian outfit has agreed on two potential pathways for top target Florian Wirtz to move to Munich:

  • Scenario 1: Wirtz signs immediately this summer. This would be the preferred solution for both parties. Bayern are said to already be preparing an offer, allegedly worth €100 million [£84.6m], which they intend to submit to Bayer Leverkusen in the near future.
  • Scenario 2: Bayern and Leverkusen can’t agree a deal this summer. In this case, Wirtz is said to be prepared to wait another year to get his move to Munich. Leverkusen would then be forced to sell in the summer of 2026, should they wish to collect a transfer fee for their superstar. It would be their last chance to do so given Wirtz’s contract expires in 2027.

Bayern did not want to comment on this when asked.

Bayern have leverage ahead of Leverkusen talks

This week, SPORT BILD reported on a meeting between sporting director Max Eberl (51) and Hans-Joachim Wirtz, which is said to have taken place in March.

From Bayern’s point of view, this gives the club leverage in the upcoming negotiations with Leverkusen’s managing director, Fernando Carro (60), and sporting director, Simon Rolfes (43), to reduce the sum below the €100m threshold in 2026.

Ultimately, Bayern and Wirtz have already reached an agreement. So, this will pave the way for the transfer poker between FC Bayern and Leverkusen to begin over this potential mega deal.

Who is Bayern’s record signing?

Summer 2023 signing Harry Kane currently holds the record (€100m [£84.7m]) as Bayern’s all-time most expensive transfer.

Even should the club’s decision-makers manage to negotiate the fee down for Florian Wirtz, this could, in all likelihood, be the club’s second-most expensive signing.

Bayern Munich signings Transfer fees
Harry Kane €100m [£84.7m]
Lucas Hernandez €80m [£68m]
Matthijs de Ligt €70m [£59.5m]
Michael Olise €60m [£50m]
