Bayern Munich are looking to bolster their attacking areas this summer and signing a new left-winger is a priority.
The German giants were keen to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, but he has opted to join Liverpool instead.
Bayern are now checking on other options, and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has emerged as one of the targets this summer.
Bayern Munich keen on Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo is one of several Dutch stars to have seen their game taken up a notch following Arne Slot’s arrival in the Premier League.
The 26-year-old winger contributed to 24 goals (in all competitions) in what was a remarkable 2024/25 season. This included a “sensational” performance against Leicester City, as the Reds powered their way to a 20th English top-flight title.
With competition between the ex-PSV man and Luis Diaz for minutes being so fierce, however, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the former has been linked with an exit.
Bayern have been linked with moves for Kaoru Mitoma, Rafael Leao and Eberechi Eze in recent days, and Gakpo is another new name on their list.
Players | Goal contributions | Minutes per goal contribution |
Cody Gakpo | 25 | 107.84 |
Kaoru Mitoma | 15 | 197.73 |
Rafael Leao | 25 | 139.96 |

This follows Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg’s first report on the subject on X (formerly Twitter).
🚨🔴 EXCL | FC Bayern are now also considering Cody #Gakpo in their search for a high-profile left winger!
The 26 y/o Dutchman is on the shortlist behind Kaoru Mitoma and Rafael Leao. There has already been contact regarding Gakpo – and still is. Max Eberl likes him.

We understand that Mitoma and Leao are considered higher up on the shortlist than Liverpool’s Dutch winger. Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams is also on the list, but nothing is hot at the moment.
Signing Cody Gakpo could be difficult for Bayern
Liverpool are expected to offload some of their underperforming players this summer, like Darwin Nunez.
However, Gakpo is more than likely to be considered in a different bracket as far as the club’s decision-makers are concerned. Certainly, a seriously tempting offer will be the lowest bar for the Bavarian giants to meet – provided both player and club are open to negotiations.
Michael Edwards (CEO of Football at FSG) has a reputation for selling players at an inflated price, and Bayern could end up being forced to fork out a hefty sum.
The Bavarian club needs to sell a few players to fund moves for new arrivals. On that note, the likes of Mathys Tel, Kingsley Coman, Palhinha and Sacha Boey have become surplus to requirements.
Furthermore, Bayern also need to find a way to reach an agreement with Leroy Sane, who will otherwise become a free agent at the end of the season.
With that in mind, whilst Gakpo would represent potentially exciting business for the club, it would appear that Mitoma and Leao are more realistic targets. For now, at least.
