Bayern eye move for ‘versatile’ Chelsea player; timing of negotiation key

Bayern Munich are showing keen interest in signing Chelsea defender Renato Veiga in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old joined Chelsea from FC Basel in the summer of 2024 on a long-term deal.

After managing just seven Premier League games, he was sent on loan to Juventus. According to Fabrizio Romano, Veiga can leave Stamford Bridge on a permanent deal.

Veiga will return to Chelsea for the pre-season, but his future at the London club is far from certain. He does not appear to feature prominently in Enzo Maresca’s plans, and the Blues could be willing to sell him.

Romano claims that Bayern have earmarked Veiga as a potential option for the centre-back role. However, any deal will depend on the future of Kim Min-jae’s exit and also the timing of the negotiations.

The Portuguese youngster is a ‘versatile’ player who can also operate as a defensive midfielder. Several clubs are keen on Veiga, so Bayern need to act quickly if they are serious about him.

Renato Veiga could be a smart signing for Bayern Munich

Bayern have been heavily linked with some of the top wingers across Europe in recent months, but they also need to bolster other areas of the pitch.

Min-jae failed to make a big impact since moving from Napoli. He is currently with the Bayern squad for the FIFA Club World Cup, but his future at the Allianz Arena is far from certain following the arrival of Jonathan Tah.

Veiga could be a smart replacement for Min-jae. He was one of the top players at FC Basel, and clearly has the mentality to thrive at a top club.

He managed 17 tackles and 19 interceptions in 13 Serie A games, as per SofaScore. Moreover, he is still very young, and Bayern can groom him properly to become the player everyone expects him to be.

Having suffered defeat to Chelsea in the race for Jamie Gittens, Bayern can take sweet revenge if they can sign a player from them.
