Manchester United ‘figurehead’ could now be sold & Bayern ‘see an opportunity’

There was once a time when the mere thought of selling Marcus Rashford would invite a chorus of scoffs and outrage.

How suddenly the mood can shift in the corridors of power!

After a relatively productive loan spell with Premier League rivals Aston Villa, there is a growing expectation that the England international will be allowed to leave this summer.

Bayern Munich could be the club to take advantage, if that’s the case.

The fact remains that Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams and Liverpool’s Luis Diaz are higher up on the shortlist.

However, with the former having signed a new long-term contract – and his release clause having increased by 50% – it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard is still available.

Likewise, the Merseysiders are, to our knowledge here at CF Bayern Insider, in no hurry to part ways with their Colombian left winger.

In fact, sources close to the club have very much indicated that the player is not for sale.

On that basis, Marcus Rashford could become an increasingly attractive alternative.

“Bayern have had the Englishman on their radar for some time. Marcus Rashford would fit perfectly into Bayern’s profile; he can play on the left and as a centre forward,” Christian Falk exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.

“He was previously considered too expensive. Now, Bayern see an opportunity. If Diaz doesn’t come, Rashford would come into focus.

“For years, he was the figurehead of Manchester United and was actually considered unsellable. Then there was repeated trouble with head coach Ruben Amorim, and Rashford was loaned out to Aston Villa in the winter.

“There, the left winger regained his old form and put in strong performances: four goals and six assists in 17 competitive matches.”

What do the stats say about Rashford?

The underlying numbers over the last 365 days aren’t particularly kind to the out-of-favour United star.

To compare with our now departed left winger, Leroy Sané, the Englishman falls short in non-penalty xG, shot-creating actions, and touches in the opposing penalty box.

Players xG xAG Shot-creating actions Touches in opposing penalty box
Marcus Rashford 0.48 (98th percentile) 0.25 (73rd percentile) 4.28 (71st percentile) 6.93 (93rd percentile)
Leroy Sané 0.24 (57th percentile) 0.27 (80th percentile) 3.62 (46th percentile) 4.91 (66th percentile)

The German international’s numbers put him in an elite category in world football. Rashford, however, looks to be a clear downgrade on the man who has walked out of Säbener Straße on a free transfer this summer.

That said, surely a move for the Manchester United academy graduate would be made with the belief that Vincent Kompany and Co. can nurture him back to his best levels.

The 2022/23 season, for instance, where the Englishman registered a remarkable 42 goal contributions in 56 games (across all competitions) isn’t that long ago.

There is a world-class player for FC Bayern to unlock.
