Bayern must pay £30m to sign Chelsea player with ‘tremendous potential’ after UEFA bombshell

Bayern Munich could sign a new centre-back this summer, and they have been linked with a move for Chelsea defender Renato Veiga.

The Portuguese defender joined the Blues from FC Basel in the summer of 2024 on a long-term deal, but he is deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old spent the last season on loan at Juventus, and Chelsea could be open to selling him permanently this summer.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that Bayern have earmarked Veiga as a potential option for the centre-back role.

The highly talented youngster is a versatile player who can also operate as a defensive midfielder.

Despite signing Jonathan Tah in the summer window, Bayern may need to sign a defender if Kim Min-jae leaves the club. The South Korean didn’t manage a single minute during the FIFA Club World Cup tournament, and he faces an uncertain future.

It is evident that Vincent Kompany does not rate Min-jae highly enough, and his potential exit is inevitable at some point during the summer transfer window. In case he leaves, Bayern could replace him with Veiga.

According to a report from Bild, Bayern may need to pay a fee of around £30m to sign Veiga, who they consider as someone with “tremendous potential”. Chelsea are aware of Bayern’s interest, but as of now, there have been no negotiations.

UEFA bombshell could force Chelsea into selling players

Chelsea have received concerning news from UEFA. The Blues have been fined £26.7m and could be fined a further £51.2m over the next four years should they continue to not fulfil the financial controls regulated by European football’s governing body.

According to a report from BBC Sport, Chelsea will not be able to register the new signings – Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens – for next season’s Champions League if they fail to end the transfer window with a “positive balance”.

Chelsea must sell players from the Conference League squad to balance the £170m of purchases made this summer.

This is a complex scenario. The potential sales of Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Armando Broja, Joao Felix and Renato Veiga, who were not selected for the Club World Cup and are deemed surplus to requirements, won’t be counted.

Veiga is one of the players who is not in Maresca’s first-team plans and Chelsea need to offload to free up the space and wages. It does not directly benefit Bayern, but the German giants can put pressure on Chelsea to sell Veiga at a lower price.
