Bayern must beat Chelsea to sign £61m ace after ‘clear signal’ dropped for exit

Bayern Munich should reignite interest in signing Xavi Simons this summer.

Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign the RB Leipzig attacker, and Bayern must make a concrete attempt, despite signing Luis Diaz from Liverpool.

Simons is looking to leave Leipzig this summer, and his latest social media activity should excite his potential suitors.

The 22-year-old has removed any reference to Leipzig in his Instagram bio, which is a “clear signal” that his time at the Bundesliga club may be coming to an end.

Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Simons, with Florian Plettenberg claiming that a verbal agreement is ‘almost done’.

Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze reports that Simons’ camp is pushing for the player’s exit. Leipzig are demanding a fee of around €70m [£61m] and are waiting for the first written offer.

The player’s bio now lists his Puma sponsorship and his ambassadorial role with UNICEF.

The Dutchman, however, has not removed posts of himself wearing the Leipzig shirt, and he still follows the club on Instagram.

Simons contributed 17 goals in 25 Bundesliga matches in the 2024-25 campaign, and he is widely seen as one of the exciting attacking players in world football.

Why Bayern Munich must reignite interest in Simons

The Bavarian giants have been heavily linked with a move for Simons this summer, but they have always considered Diaz as their primary target.

Christian Falk previously CFBayern that Max Eberl has a strong connection with Simons, and he would be the first option for Bayern if a deal for Diaz falls through.

Despite signing the Colombian, Bayern can still afford to bolster their attacking areas, and investing in the Dutch attacker makes a lot of sense.

Recently, Bayern president, Herbert Hainer, admitted that losing top players from the Bundesliga is not a healthy sign for the league.

He said: “Of course, transfers of exceptional players abroad are always a loss for the Bundesliga; they are good for every league. That’s why it’s so important that the Bundesliga finds solutions together to remain internationally competitive.”

After losing a special talent in Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, it would be a big blow for the league to lose Simons as well to another Premier League club.

Simons is versatile enough to play across all three positions upfront, and he would be a cracking addition as Bayern aim to win every competition they take part in.
