Thomas Muller joins Vancouver Whitecaps after leaving Bayern Munich

Thomas Muller has joined MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Back in March, it was revealed that the legendary German forward would leave Bayern Munich after 25 glittering years.

Initially, it appeared that the 35-year-old would join Bayern’s partner club, Los Angeles FC, but he chose to move to the Canadian club instead.

Christian Falk informed CFBayern towards the end of July that Muller had decided to go to Canada to join MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps had been in talks with FC Cincinnati over the Discovery Rights of Muller. They secured that for a package worth $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM), split between the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Falk said that the MLS had intervened as a mediator to ensure that Muller’s transfer does not fail due to transfer demands from a club in its league association.

Finally, the deal has been made official. The 35-year-old will take part in the remainder of the 2025 MLS season on a standard contract, before transitioning into a Designated Player role in 2026.

Thomas Muller – Bayern Munich legend

Muller made a total of 49 appearances in 2024-25, but he was allowed to depart the Allianz Arena on a free transfer after the end of the Club World Cup.

The 131-cap Germany international told the club’s website: “I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship.

“I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win. I’ve had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sørensen, and now I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs.”

Muller scored 250 goals and provided 276 assists in 756 appearances for Bayern Munich, and he leaves the German champions as a true legend.

He is expected to slot straight into the Vancouver XI, and the club view him as a statement signing.

Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC CEO & sporting director, added: “Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate Raumdeuter “Interpreter of space” – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement.

“He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team. Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership – a transformative moment for our club and our city.”
