‘Liverpool are watching’: Bayern fear blockbuster transfer could be triggered amid contract anxiety

Michael Olise’s future in Munich is, for the time being, in Bayern’s hands.

However, Liverpool and Manchester City’s well-documented interest in the former Premier League winger will be of little comfort to Vincent Kompany and Co.

The French international’s contract is set to expire in June 2029.

Bayern want to hand Michael Olise an improved contract

It’s no secret that the Bavarian giants have high hopes for Olise’s future in football.

Of course, the ex-Crystal Palace has arguably already more than justified the €60m [£51.9m] outlay Bayern committed to last summer.

His debut season in the Bundesliga yielded 27 goal contributions (12 goals and 15 assists) in 34 German top-flight games.

It’s unsurprising, then, that two Premier League giants are already thinking about bringing the attacker back to England.

“The case of Michael Olise’s contract at Bayern Munich bears some similarity to Jamal Musiala’s case – if you wait a little too long, it’s getting difficult,” Christian Falk exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.

“In the past, clubs would happily open such talks a year before the contract expired. But now, things are different! If you see such quality as Olise possesses, you have to do it much earlier, otherwise, the Premier League will be quick to swoop. Manchester City are watching him, Liverpool are watching him.

“As long as his contract is running, you have a chance to keep him. Now, Bayern need to see if they can convince him that his future is in Munich. On the one hand, there is an argument to boost his salary in line with the quality of his performances, but on the other hand, Bayern still want to lower salaries throughout the squad. So, it’s not easy!”

Liverpool & Man City facing an uphill battle for transfer

It’s worth re-emphasising that Michael Olise does not have an exit clause included in his Bayern contract.

That will certainly complicate matters for both Manchester City and Liverpool if they were hoping to avoid a potentially prolonged transfer saga.

Arne Slot’s men, on their end, will already be more than aware of how all-consuming this can be after almost narrowly missing out on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

However, similarly to the Sweden international, Olise may very well be worth the hassle for an elite European outfit in a year’s time.

With three years left on his contract by that point, of course, any interested party will still have to pay top dollar.

Why would either Liverpool or Manchester City be interested?

The reasoning is pretty obvious from a Liverpool standpoint. The Reds need to start thinking about a long-term successor for right wing stalwart Mo Salah.

The Egyptian King will turn 34 next June (with only a year left on his contract). There’s every chance he’ll once again prove himself worthy of staying put in the English top-flight, but Liverpool surely won’t risk waiting until the summer of 2027 to secure a successor.

Manchester City have snapped up a promising young winger in Rayan Cherki (22), who has generally featured on the right wing.

However, there is a bit of a drop-off from the options beyond the starting front-three of Omar Marmoush, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki.

Signing Michael Olise, of course, would seriously restrict the pathway of Oscar Bobb. However, Pep Guardiola may very well choose to look at the Norwegian as a versatile forward option.
