Christian Falk drops big afternoon update on Dayot Upamecano contract talks

Talks between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano are progressing in a positive manner.

The Bundesliga champions are hoping to avoid losing the French centre-half on a free transfer, with his contract currently set to expire next summer.

In that event, Spanish giants Real Madrid would be considered a top contender for the 26-year-old’s signature.

However, they would also be likely to encounter potential competition from English outfits like Liverpool.

An important step forward has already been taken in negotiations, as both sides have now appeared to reach an agreement on the base salary!

Club president Herbert Hainer spoke about the discussions: “The talks are ongoing, led by Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. And of course, I hope Dayot stays with us for a long time.”

The next hurdle for Bayern Munich to clear now appears to be the signing fee.

On that note, fullback Alphonso Davies reportedly received around €20m [£17.3m] after agreeing a new contract.

However, FC Bayern chiefs are not prepared to offer quite as much to the also Premier League-linked Upamecano should he agree to extend his own terms at the Allianz Arena.

Why do Bayern want to keep Upamecano in Munich?

There will still be reservations over how Bayern Munich conducted themselves in the summer transfer window.

In particular, revolving around consecutive failures to secure their top targets in the market – most notably, Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade.

However, the Bavarians do deserve credit for ticking off perhaps the most important checkbox in the summer, which is, of course, the signing of a defensive leader in Jonathan Tah.

Now, it seems that Dayot Upamecano is the favoured partner alongside the German national.

The club does still appreciate Kim Min-jae’s potential as a defensive partner for Tah. However, the South Korean international would also be the likelier option to be sold than his French teammate, if push came to shove.
