Bayern join Man Utd in race to sign French star; available for free next summer

Bayern Munich have reportedly shown interest in signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has a contract at San Siro until the end of the season, and it is unclear when the Rossoneri will offer him a new deal.

Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Maignan, but it appears that Bayern are also keen to secure his signature.

The Red Devils signed young keeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, but Ruben Amorim still feels the need to bolster that area.

Andre Onana left Old Trafford on loan this summer to join Trabzonspor for the rest of the season, and he is not keen to return.

Likewise, Altay Bayindir’s future has come under speculation, which means Man Utd could be forced into signing a new goalkeeper next summer, and Maignan is an option for them.

According to a fresh report from Teamtalk, Bayern have also joined the race to sign the French keeper, as they are stepping up their search for a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer.

The German goalkeeper has been outstanding this season, as he has been over the years, but surely at some point, the club must decide to bring in a replacement.

The report claims that Bayern see Maignan as an ideal heir for Neuer, and Vincent Kompany likes his ability to command the entire team from the back.

Should Bayern look for better options elsewhere?

Maignan won the Serie A title in his first season at Milan. While he has kept 63 clean sheets in 168 appearances, his form in recent years has declined.

Goalkeepers usually have a long career, and Bayern can afford to take a gamble on him, considering that he will be available on a free transfer next summer.

At the same time, there could be fierce competition for him next summer, with Man Utd and Chelsea also in the mix.

It is unclear whether Bayern will offer Neuer another contract extension, but they are indeed planning to tie Michael Olise down to a long-term deal.

Bayern are also working on securing a contract extension for Dayot Upamecano, who could also become a free agent next summer.
