Christian Falk: Bayern take Liverpool ‘very seriously’ in race to sign 25y/o star

Bayern Munich retain a strong interest in signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who is set to become a free agent next summer.

During the summer transfer window, Guehi came very close to joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day. However, the deal collapsed in the final hours after Oliver Glasner threatened to walk away if the defender was sold.

The Eagles ran out of time to sign a proper replacement, and therefore, Guehi stayed on at Selhurst Park, despite completing his medical ahead of his move to Anfield.

What’s next in the Marc Guehi transfer saga?

Liverpool could move for the 25-year-old during the January transfer window, after the ACL injury to Giovanni Leoni has depleted their defensive set-up.

However, there is a high probability that Guehi might want to stay at the club for the rest of the season and leave for free next summer.

If that is the scenario, then expect multiple heavyweight clubs, including Liverpool, to battle for his signature, as top clubs will not let the opportunity to sign a quality centre-back for free pass by easily.

Bayern were interested in signing Guehi in the summer. Max Eberl is a big fan of the defender, but the Bavarian giants could not make a move because they could not offload Kim Min-jae.

The Bundesliga champions have not lost interest in Guehi, and the defender is still top of their priority list. At the same time, Munich bosses are aware that Guehi could soon be off the market.

Real Madrid are considered their biggest competitor in the Guehi chase, but Liverpool are also being taken very seriously.

Bayern working on deal for Upamecano

Interestingly, Bayern are also in a similar position to Palace.

Their talismanic defender, Dayot Upamecano, has a few months remaining on his current contract at Allianz Arena and could leave for free if Bayern fail to reach an agreement.

What I understand is that a significant step forward has already been taken in the negotiations, and both sides appear to have reached an agreement on the base salary.

However, they are yet to come to terms on the signing fee, but Bayern are hopeful that Upamecano will sign a new deal at the club.
