Christian Falk: Nico Schlotterbeck could be ‘interesting’ option for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have kept Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck on their wish list, but he is not a priority option at the moment.

The 25-year-old has been a key player for Dortmund, and the German club are trying to secure a new contract for him.

The defence is one of the areas where Bayern could look to bolster next summer, and Schlotterbeck could be an interesting option for them.

Schlotterbeck is one of the fan favourites at Dortmund and a key player in Niko Kovac’s side.

Dortmund have already offered him a contract extension until 2030, where his salary is set to increase from €2.5m to at least €8m annually; however, he is demanding around €10m.

The defender has himself admitted that he is not thinking about signing a new contract anytime soon, and his situation has alerted heavyweight clubs, including Bayern and Real Madrid.

Bayern attempted to poach him when he was at Freiburg in 2022, shortly before his move to Dortmund, and there is now renewed interest.

How serious are Bayern to land Schlotterbeck?

Bayern are working to extend the contract of Dayot Upamecano, who will become a free agent next summer.

The Bavarian giants have more or less agreed on his base salary, but they are unwilling to offer him a huge signing-on fee, as the club have taken cost-cutting measures.

While Bayern are hopeful of reaching an agreement with the French defender, they are also aware of interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.

At the same time, the Bundesliga giants are also showing keen interest in Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace defender, who will become a free agent next summer. Bayern see Guehi as a top target to replace Kim Min-jae.

As it stands, Schlotterbeck is not the first-choice target in Bayern’s search for a defender.

His name is on the list for consideration if Upamecano does not sign a new contract and Bayern also miss out on Guehi.
