Lothar Matthaus has suggested that Bayern Munich should consider signing Nico Schlotterbeck if they fail to secure a contract extension for Dayot Upamecano.
The French defender has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at the Allianz Arena, and while talks have been ongoing regarding an extension, he has yet to sign a new deal.
His situation has alerted several top clubs in the Premier League, with Liverpool being reportedly interested in signing him next summer.
Liverpool likely to miss out on Upamecano?

The Reds could look to sign a new defender in the January transfer window following the injury to Giovanni Leoni, who has ruptured his ACL and will be out for a year.
With Ibrahima Konate’s contract also expiring next summer, Liverpool are checking on several options, and Upamecano has emerged as a potential target.
However, Christian Falk has informed CFBayern that both sides appear to have reached an agreement on the base salary. The only issue holding up here is the signing fee, which Bayern are hopeful that can be resolved.
Could Nico Schlotterbeck be an option for Bayern?
German legend Matthaus believes that the Borussia Dortmund defender can be a replacement for Upamecano if he does not sign a new deal.
Schlotterbeck is apparently hesitating on signing a new deal with Dortmund beyond 2027, and they could be willing to offload him at the right price.
Matthaus wrote in his column for Sky Germany: “If Upamecano does leave Bayern in the summer, there will be a quality and quantity problem in that position.
“Then FC Bayern should go for Nico Schlotterbeck . He’s currently hesitating about extending his contract with BVB beyond 2027, and Dortmund would have to sell him in the summer if they want to get a decent fee.
“Schlotterbeck definitely has the quality for Bayern, and a German international is always interesting for them. I think he’ll play an important role alongside Jonathan Tah in the national team. Schlotterbeck, as a left-footed centre-back, would also fit in well with Tah, and Bayern’s build-up play would be even better than it already is.”
Even if Upamecano stays, it is still worth considering making an offer for the former Freiburg defender, especially given the uncertainty about Kim Min-jae’s future.
The German international joined Dortmund in the summer of 2022 and has made over 125 appearances, scoring six goals.
