Despite Madrid pushing until the very end, Bayern held their nerve in a high-scoring classic, underlining their credentials as genuine contenders for the trophy this season.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Match report

Manuel Neuer’s costly error on the edge of his own penalty area was swiftly punished by Arda Guler, who reacted sharply before curling a superb 25-yard strike into the corner.

Bayern Munich responded in the sixth minute after falling behind early, as Joshua Kimmich’s superb corner caused chaos in a crowded penalty area, with the pace of the delivery leaving Andriy Lunin stranded before Aleksandar Pavlovic glanced home from close range.

Kylian Mbappe made a surging run from midfield, but Konrad Laimer tracked back superbly to deny him a clear sight of goal.

Dayot Upamecano produced a perfectly timed challenge to dispossess Vinicius Jr as he bore down on goal, celebrating the intervention with the intensity of a match-winning moment.

Joshua Kimmich cut inside and tested Andriy Lunin with a sharp effort, forcing the goalkeeper into a save that conceded another corner, before Real Madrid broke quickly at the other end, where Vinicius Jr attempted to find Kylian Mbappe, only for Neuer to intervene with a decisive punch.

Arda Guler curled a superb free-kick over the wall and into the top corner from a promising position, with Manuel getting a slight touch but unable to keep it out.

Josip Stanisic forced Andriy Lunin into a fine save before Bayern’s attack was recycled, and after brief handball appeals, Dayot Upamecano picked out Harry Kane, who calmly curled his finish into the bottom corner to restore Bayern’s lead in the tie.

Vinicius Jr unleashed a venomous strike from distance, only to be denied by the woodwork after a superb effort.

Real Madrid struck again with a devastating counter, as Vinicius Jr surged down the left before sliding a precise pass across for Kylian Mbappe, who finished clinically to cap off a breathtaking passage of play.

In the second half, Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a superb corner into the box, where Kylian Mbappe met it on the volley but fired straight at Manuel Neuer, before Bayern broke forward through Michael Olise, only for the move to fizzle out due to a lack of support.

Luis Diaz squandered a golden opportunity after being played through by Jamal Musiala, whose milestone moment saw him become the youngest German to reach 50 Champions League appearances, but the Colombian’s heavy first touch resulted in a tame effort when he should have done better.

Michael Olise delivered a superb ball into the box, but Dayot Upamecano got too much on his header when only a delicate glance was required.

Michael Olise drifted across the edge of the penalty area and curled an effort just wide of the top corner, before Harry Kane moments later struggled to get the ball out of his feet as Real’s defence closed him down.

Several Real players had been walking a disciplinary tightrope, and Eduardo Camavinga finally crossed the line, with the already-booked substitute shown a second yellow for his challenge on Harry Kane, resulting in a red card.

Steve McManaman said on TNT Sport: “The red card two minutes before was idiotic, ridiculous. And it’s just allowed the space out wide for Luis Diaz to get on the ball and cut inside.”

Luis Diaz combined neatly with Jamal Musiala in a slick one-two, the latter teeing him up with a clever backheel before the Colombian fired a stunning strike from the edge of the box into the top corner, aided by a slight deflection that left Andriy Lunin with no chance.

In the dying moments of the match, Michael Olise made his third chance count in emphatic fashion, curling a stunning effort into the top corner off the inside of the post to cap a match filled with spectacular goals.
